Crazy Rich Asians: Movie Moments in Singapore

Updated August 16, 2020.

It’s #MovieNight! Have you seen Crazy Rich Asians yet? If so, you know how great it is! If not, what are you waiting for?! As you may already know from my Best of the Year of Active Travel post, this year’s blog theme is the Year of Movie Moments, and this time around we are on location at the setting for my new favorite romantic comedy—Singapore!

The Storyline

The movie is based on a book of the same name, and it’s about a beautiful economics professor who goes to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family and attend a wedding. It’s not until they are escorted into a first-class airline suite that she finds out the truth: her boyfriend’s family is rich—as in, crazy Asian rich! This may sound a little crass… unless you’ve been to Singapore. Then it totally makes sense. I mean, they have made Super Trees on reclaimed land and built a sky-scraping hotel with the world’s highest infinity pool on top!

The Sites

Crazy Rich Asians does a fantastic job of making you laugh and feel inspired to be true to yourself all at the same time, but it also does a fabulous job of showing off the best of this tiny island-nation! There’s high-end shopping on Orchard Road (with brands and designers I’d never heard of before my first trip to Singapore); infamous street food; the Gardens by the Bay; historic hotels (keep an eye out for the historic Fullerton Hotel in a couple of scenes—that’s where I stayed on my first trip to Singapore!); the Double Helix Bridge; the one-of-a-kind Marina Bay Sands Hotel, observation deck, and its infinity pool; and of course, the iconic Singaporean symbol of the Merlion:

You can find these sites easily because Singapore is so walkable. Get the details in my post: Iconic Singapore Sites!

Have Your Own Crazy Rich Asians Movie Moment

You can’t go all that way and not have your own movie moment, right? Here are some suggestions!

Movie Moment 1: Street Food

Definitely eat at the Street Food Market like they did in the movie! You gotta eat, so you might as well make it good.

Movie Moment 2: Marina Bay Sands Observation Deck

Spring for a ticket to visit the Marina Bay Sands Observation Deck! You’ll see it a few times in the movie, and it’s the best place to take in sweeping panoramic views of Singapore. If you’re staying at the hotel, you can go for free, but if not, you don’t have to miss out! For just $23 SGD ($17 USD), you can ride the elevator all the way up and take in the views for yourself.

Movie Moment 3: Gardens By the Bay Light Show

Who can forget the part of the movie where everyone is at the wedding reception and they’re in this amazing place that’s colorful and lights up the night? It’s in the Gardens by the Bay! Every night they put on a light show featuring the Supertrees lit up and set to music! We watched from our room at the Marina Bay Sands, but you can actually be in the Garden as well! You can visit the Gardens by the Bay for free, but other features do require tickets—you will not regret visiting!
