The Best FREE Things to Do in Key West

As a penny pincher by nature, I’m always interested in how many FREE things I can find in a new place. Don’t get me wrong; lots of museums, sites, and activities are well worth the money, but it’s also wise to save a little money when you can. So if you’re looking for the FREE, fun things to do in Key West, this is the post for you!

Catch the Sunrise at White Street Pier

Location: White Street and Atlantic Boulevard
Open: Always
Alternate Name: Edward B. Knight Pier

This is a prime sunrise location because it stretches for quite a ways out into the water. There is nothing to obstruct the perfect sunrise views! It’s about a quarter mile long, so not too far, but it’s a popular spot to walk, fish, look out at the water, and, of course, watch the sunrise.

Sunrise is the best!

The Southernmost Point

Location: Corner of Whitehead and South Streets
Open: Always

This famous photo op develops a line over time, so you might want to go early, or you might want to check back a time or two throughout the day. It really is a fun place to get a memorable photo from Key West, and so it’s well worth doing! Just ask the person in line behind you to take a photo, and be willing to return the favor. We actually love the photo of us here so much that it’s both of our laptops’ wallpaper!

Key West Garden Club and West Martello Tower

This beautiful garden and unfinished Civil War-era fort are walking distance from Old Town Key West, and located adjacent to Higgs Beach Park, which is also FREE! It’s absolutely beautiful inside, with brick pathways, lush courtyards, a fountain, and a rare collection of native plants as well. There are restrooms and water bottle refilling stations here, so plan to stay a while!

Key West Wildlife Center

Location: 1801 White Street (inside Indigenous Park)
Open: Thursday-Tuesday 11:00am-2:00pm (Closed Wednesday)

This seven acre wildlife center is located inside Indigenous Park. Their clinic rescues and rehabs injured and sick wildlife found throughout the Keys. There’s a great walking trail here that goes right by a freshwater pond and two aviaries, where you can see the birds that are almost well enough to be reintroduced to the wild. Visiting is FREE, but they do accept donations if you are so inclined.

You can also contribute by purchasing something for them off of their Amazon wishlist or making them your Amazon Smile beneficiary. More on their website.

Hang Out at Higgs Beach

Location: 1000 Atlantic Boulevard
Open: 6:00am-11:00pm

You’ll find this public beach at Clarence Higgs Beach Park. It’s easy to find because it’s walkable from Old Town Key West, but it’s also cool because it’s home to the only shore-accessible underwater marine park in the United States! Bring your snorkel gear and water shoes to get a peek below the surface.

Explore Key West Cemetery

Location: 701 Pauline Street
Open: Daily 7:00am-7:00pm

You’ll find this historic cemetery on 19 acres right in the middle of the island. Why? Because a hurricane in 1846 washed away the original location (and the bodies) near where Higgs Beach is located today! This one was established in 1847, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. You can walk through it as you like, and they even offer “paranormal assitance” for FREE, too!

Be sure to pay your respects at the POW section of the cemetery.
