10 Active Things to Do at the Trapp Family Lodge

IMG_5410

If you’ve been following along on Instagram and Facebook, you know my husband Steve and I had a fun time at the Trapp Family Lodge in beautiful Stowe, Vermont! We chose peak fall foliage season for our trip, and it has been a dream of mine for many years to stay at the Lodge. After they made it to safety, they went to America to tour as the Trapp Family Singers, and finally settled in Stowe! This is the Year of Active Travel for the blog, so if you want to stay at the Lodge one day, here are 10 things to do to keep you busy!

10. Explore the Property

Even if you’re not staying at the Trapp Family Lodge, you can still get a day pass to explore the miles and miles of trails! Steve and I really enjoy hiking, long walks, morning runs, etc., and we never had to take the same path twice!

9. Learn to Rock Climb

It’s true! They have their own climbing wall and instructors to help you learn the ropes, too. If this is something you’ve always wanted to try, this is your perfect opportunity. And the climbing wall is right inside the Fitness Center, so it’s available year-round!

8. Walk to the Brewery for a Tour

The Trapps have recently ventured into craft brewing, and their brewery is just a short hike (downhill!) from the Lodge. Check their tour times, head across the street from the Lodge, and follow the signs to the Bierhall!

7. Ski

Stowe and the Trapp Family Lodge are just where you want to be for ski season! Not only is it beautiful, their miles of well-maintained hiking and biking trails become their ski trails! Not a skier? Try snowshoeing, snow hiking, build a snowman, make snow angels, or have a snowball fight! Need some snow gear? Check out Gear Up for Winter Travel!

6. Eat!

All this activity means you’ll be working up an appetite! Take the opportunity to try out all the restaurants on the property and a few in downtown Stowe, too! We loved the sweets from the Kaffeehaus, the schnitzel from the lounge, and the spaetzel and bratwurst from the Bierhall! For all the details of what we ate, check out What to Eat in Stowe!

5. Participate in the Mountain Marathon

Love a good trail run? Every fall, the Trapp Family Lodge puts on a marathon! Imagine running through peak foliage in perfect fall temperatures and plan to sign up for next year’s festivities!

4. Take a Yoga Class

I’ll admit, I’m not a yogi. I’m way too distractable! But whether you love yoga or just want an opportunity to try it out, the daily morning yoga class could be just the thing for you! And the set up is amazing. The view out the front windows seems to go on forever and will be relaxing no matter what!

3. Go for a Swim

Training for a triathlon? Need some cardio that’s easy on your joints? Just like a nice dip in the pool as part of your workout routine? The Lodge has a phenomenal indoor, heated lap pool and dedicates two hours every morning for those wanting to get their laps in any time of year!

2. Take a Guided Hike

Steve and I usually like to take our hikes on our own, but when I saw there would be a guided hike to the chapel in the woods built by Werner von Trapp himself, I had to sign us up! We learned about the flora and fauna found on the property, knew we wouldn’t get lost, and got some little-known history about Werner and the whole von Trapp family!

1. Hike to Slayton Pasture Cabin

Can’t decide which hike to take? Make your goal the Slayton Pasture Cabin. It’s about 3 miles one way, and the return trip is mostly downhill! During ski season, the Cabin is open for warming up, eating soup, drinking hot cocoa, and having a real “cabin in the woods” experience! Many people cross-country ski their way up, have a nice warm break when they reach the cabin, and ski their way back down!
