The Ultimate Guide to Solo Travel in San Antonio, Texas

Wow! I was blown away on my recent trip to San Antonio. It had never really been on my radar, and I visited with my family, but the whole time I was there, I kept thinking how great it is for a solo trip. So here’s the info you need to know to make the “Alamo City” your next (or first!) solo trip.

Why San Antonio?

This is a great place for any solo traveler, but I want to really emphasize what an amazing starter destination this is for first-time solo travelers. The airport is only a short Uber ride away. Most of the sites you’ll want to see are walkable from downtown. It’s relatively affordable compared to other major cities. People are friendly. It’s lovely! Honestly, this is one of the best places to travel solo, especially if you’re sort of uncertain or need to gain your travel confidence!

Is It Safe?

San Antonio is the safest major city in Texas. There are multiple military bases in the area, and there is a security presence around the Alamo and the Riverwalk. There is a homelessness presence, which can make solo travelers, particularly female solo travelers, go into high alert. However, I went out exploring multiple times on my own during my trip, including running in the early morning, and I never felt unsafe.

How Can I Get There and Get Around?

Unless you live close enough to drive, you’ll want to fly into San Antonio International Airport (SAT). From there, just take a taxi or rideshare of your choice to your hotel, which you hopefully booked either on the Riverwalk or Downtown. From there, you can walk pretty much anywhere you want. There are a few places you may need to taxi or rideshare to see, but there is plenty to keep you occupied for two or three days, or even longer!

It’s one of the most walkable cities in the U.S.!

Where Should I Go?

Definitely explore the Riverwalk! It’s very unique, and there is plenty to see and do—and eat! Take the Go Rio boat tour, go up in the Tower of the Americas, grab an agua fresca at the historic Market Square, and you can’t miss the Alamo! San Antonio is one of the most walkable cities I’ve ever been to in Texas or in the South, so take advantage of the close proximity of almost everything while you’re there.

San Fernando Cathedral is one of the oldest in the nation.

How Can I Save Money?

When you’re traveling solo, there’s no splitting the bill, so it’s important to save where you can. There are plenty of FREE things to do, including the Alamo, Riverwalk, Market Square, San Fernando Cathedral, and more. Opt for a rideshare instead of renting a car. And don’t be afraid to go a little off the Riverwalk for some of your meals to save a little money. But honestly, San Antonio is very affordable, so don’t assume every restaurant on the Riverwalk is a tourist trap!

The number 1 attraction in town is FREE to visit!
