I recently started running again after several months off, and it’s incredible what a difference it has made for my mood and my outlook! I really love exploring a new place on foot, and a morning run is a great time to get photos with fewer people in them. But when the weather outside is frightful, a run does require some specific gear. I don’t mind packing these things, because they also make great base layers or have other good uses for cold weather travel. If you’re looking for running gear, or looking for a great gift for the traveling runner in your life, you’ve found the right resource!
Fleece-lined Shirts
Talk about a game-changer! When a friend told me about this a few years ago, and I tried one for the first time, I was absolutely blown away! It really makes all the difference. Personally, this is all I need for runs down to about 30 degrees. That’s right, no extra layers, no jacket. This is also the perfect base layer for cold trips where you’ll be walking around outside most of the day!
Fleece-lined Leggings
These are the best. Many runners hate having anything on their legs when running, but I’m not one of them! I’ve been using fleece-lined leggings for winter runs for years, and they really make a difference for me, as a cold-natured person. I actually love them for cold weather trips as well, but for daily wear in addition to running gear! The fleece lining is thin, so you won’t feel like the marshmallow man when you move, but it really makes a difference!
Running Jacket
Make this one a bright color! Being seen in the dawn and dusk is vital, specially for outdoor runners. Always make sure your outermost layer is bright and visible. A good running jacket is usually thermal or fleece-lined, and thin, not bulky. This one is perfect.
Running Hat or Head Ring
This is probably the most important item on the list, with the exception of shoes (below). When it’s cold outside, my whole body feels warmer if my head and hears are covered. I love the messy bun beanies because I can put my hair out the top, but a head ring will achieve the same goal. Keep those ears warm, and your run will be much more comfortable, even in the cold.
Gloves
It’s got to be in the 20s for me to want to wear gloves, but when I need them, I need good ones! I like the kind with touch screen finger tips, but it’s not essential. The important thing is just to keep your hands warm throughout your run.
Earbuds
Some people love their AirPods, but they just don’t work out for me, and my husband is the same. We both prefer the brand below, which has the wrap-around ear feature and stays in place better for both of us. I also love that I can pair one with my phone and the other with my iPad, so I’m not constantly re-pairing them every time I switch devices. I always run with one earbud in and one ear free, for safety reasons, so it works out!
Arm Band
While there are times we’d all love to be free of our phones, they’re an integral part of many people’s lives right now. Most runners keep track of their mileage, times, music, and more on their phones, and I keep mine with me for safety reasons as well. An arm band that holds my phone keeps my hands free, and my run easy. I’ve tried several over the years, and this one with the detachable, rotating holster is my favorite.
Warm Socks
When the weather gets cold, the one part of me that’s most difficult to warm up on a run is my feet. That is, until a friend got me a pair of Smartwool socks! I love them so much, and now I wear Smartwool every time I go for a cold weather run. I also love them for walking around all day on cold trips, too. Keep those toes warm, y’all!
Running Shoes
This is a very personal choice, so if you’re buying these for a gift, be sure to ask for what brand and model your runner needs, specifically! The shoes are the most important thing for a runner to have, but they’re often the most expensive, too. And they’re the most necessary running item to replace, so if you’re offering, they’ll definitely take you up on it!
BodyFit by Amy Membership
As a runner who doesn’t have a natural runner’s build, I have dealt with several knee, hip, and foot injuries over the years—and yet I love running anyway and want to run as long into my life as I can. What makes that happen? Cross training: Lifting weights, agility training, and mobility work! I’ve been using the BodyFit by Amy app for years now, and it’s the best in the business. I’ve tried many, many others over the years!
