The Best Places to Eat in Hollywood in One Weekend

Only have one weekend to spend in Hollywood? Hoping to make the most of it all–including the food? I’ve got you covered! California has earthquakes, droughts, mudslides, etc… But there’s no denying they have some amazingly fresh food, too! In fact, my husband and I were continually impressed with the quality of the food there, and if I could go back and have another day there, I’d do it just for the food! Here are the best places to eat in Hollywood, if you only have one weekend.

Javista Coffee

This cafe is located just a couple of blocks off Hollywood Boulevard, far enough to be off the beaten path, but near enough to be an easy breakfast or lunch spot. Their menu had enough variety to have a little something for everyone, but it was small enough that everything they do is done well. Steve really enjoyed his breakfast burrito, and I would have gone back for seconds on my hummus and veggie bagel!

Alcove Cafe & Bakery

We met up with some friends here for brunch, and it was amazing! The restaurant is in one of the two oldest homes in the Los Feliz neighborhood, which I find more than charming. It’s just a short Uber ride from Hollywood Boulevard, and worth the ride. It’s very popular, so I suggest going early, but even though we seemed to be there at the busiest time, our food came out quickly–honestly, I was bracing myself for a 45-60 minute wait on my food, but it seemed like it was out within 10 minutes! Steve got the Cobb Salad, and I had the Country Breakfast, complete with pancakes, sausage, and eggs. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, so thankfully it was a dry day, and we were able to sit outside!

Tiago Coffee Bar & Kitchen

This coffee shop is another great option in Hollywood, just half a block from the Boulevard. Again with the fresh, often locally-sourced ingredients, this was a great place for breakfast or coffee. I chose the Black Kale Omelette, which came loaded with veggies (not just kale), topped with avocado, and served with toasted sourdough. We also ordered a green salad to share, which, as you can see in the photo below, was way more than just green! Mine was delicious, but Steve’s took the cake! He ordered the thickest slice of Stuffed French Toast known to man. It was also a real winner!

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

If you’ve been following along for a while, you probably already know that I try to avoid national, U.S. chain restaurants when we travel. The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf does have stores nationally, but we have far fewer of them on the East Coast, so we made an exception! Steve got a large coffee, and I threw them for a bit of a loop when I ordered a steamed milk with cookie butter flavor. Unfortunately for me, I’ve been off coffee since having COVID last September, but how could I pass up a chance to have a cookie butter beverage?! Oh, and this store is located right in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre!

Yamashiro

I have special affection for Japan, as it was my first-ever solo trip, and it’s the destination that started the blog! So, when local friends recommended it, I jumped at the chance to dine here. It’s absolutely beautiful, and just half a mile from the action of Hollywood Boulevard. I suggest taking an Uber here, as it’s quite an uphill walk (we walked it, but not in fancy shoes!), and there is no self-parking, only valet (which may be equivalent to Ubering there and back anyway).

That said, it truly was like stepping back into Japan upon arrival here. The restaurant has been there over 100 years, and it was built to resemble a place in the mountains of Kyoto. Definitely dine outdoors if weather and space permit! The only time we could go was for Sunday Brunch (dinner reservations were already booked up by the time we were ready to reserve), which was more brunch-focused and less Japanese-focused, but we were both impressed with what we ordered. Was it the best California Roll in the United States? Perhaps!

Pro tip: Unless brunch is your jam, get reservations at least a month out so you can go to dinner here!

Nick the Greek

We rounded out our weekend meals with a to-go order from Nick the Greek. Having just returned from Greece ourselves, we were quite pleased with the quality (and quantity!) of the food here. Our entrees were too much, but that didn’t stop us from also ordering a side of hummus and pita! Steve recommends the Chicken Souvlaki, and I can absolutely recommend the Lamb Gyro Bowl. It might have been the tenderest lamb I’ve ever eaten.
