Europe is an excellent travel choice for any number of reasons: the scenery, the Euro, the history, the culture, the widespread speaking of English, the frequent flights to and from the continent, etc., etc., etc.! But my favorite thing about Europe is… the food! Are you surprised? Me neither. The bread tastes amazing, the cheese is incredible, the chocolate is indulgent, and I just can’t get enough of all of it! We had amazing food in Salzburg, so I hope you brought your appetite today because this post might make you hungry!

Organic Pizza Salzburg

We arrived in Salzburg at 4:00pm after an 8-hour redeye flight, a 2.5-hour train ride (with a change), and a 20-minute walk. We wanted pizza to-go and an early bedtime! We found this place quickly (it helps that they have “pizza” right in the name), and I knew we made the right choice when one of the guys behind the counter (I think they were brothers) went outside to bring in some basil from the garden. Talk about fresh!

Hotel Sacher Cafe

The Hotel Sacher is one of the best hotels in the world, and they make a pretty tasty breakfast, too! We stopped into the cafe for breakfast on our first morning in Salzburg, and it kept us fueled through our Sound of Music Tour!

Cafe Braun

Our Sound of Music tour took us to nearby, beautiful Mondsee. St. Michael’s Basilica in this town is the filming location for Maria and Captain von Trapp’s wedding in the movie! And right across the street there’s a cafe that serves the best apple strudel, according to our tour guide! Yeah, “My Favorite Things” was stuck in my head the rest of the day, and we had schnitzel later that day!

About that schnitzel…

After the tour and a gorgeous hike across the ridge overlooking Salzburg’s Old Town, we felt like we earned some schnitzel! I also had the best dessert of my life at this authentic restaurant in the Altstadt. Take a look!

This was a totally new dessert for me, and it was incredible! It was like a custard inside with a meringue coating, covered with powdered sugar. I am still having dreams about it! It is a Salzburg specialty, and I’ve never seen it anywhere else. It is definitely worth going back for!

This little cafe is just off of Mozartplatz and was the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of playing tourist!

BackWerk

Well, we did so much touring that day that between the museums, the churches, and the explorations, we didn’t stop for lunch! So we got an early supper to-go and ate it on our balcony—the one with the stunning view! This little grab-and-go shop called BackWerk right by the Salzach River was the ideal place to pick up something fresh, authentic, and delicious!

Resch & Frisch Beckerei-Konditorei

Our last full day in Salzburg started off with a gorgeous run along the Salzach River’s perfect footpaths, which really worked up our appetites! We stopped into Resch & Frisch Bakery, just steps away from Mozartplatz, and picked up some savory baked goods to take with us up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress and had a little picnic up at the top before it opened! The pastries got a little roughed up on the way up the mountain, so I took some photos at the bakery of the things we got!

We did take time for lunch that day… sort of! Let’s just say I’m never one to pass up an opportunity for a sweet! And Steve was okay with an excuse for a mid-day coffee.

Sacher Grill

We couldn’t let the trip go by without a nice dinner at one of our hotel’s beautiful restaurants! We simply couldn’t have had a better experience at the Hotel Sacher Salzburg, and honestly, we had some of the best food there, too! This is maybe the best schnitzel I’ve ever had, anywhere. Do not skip the cranberry sauce next time you have some schnitzel of your own!

I have to say, Sacher Grill’s Nockerl was not as good as the first one I’d had! It was straight-up meringue, which is definitely okay by me! But I liked the smooth creaminess of the first one. I recommend trying both so you can choose for yourself!

Hotel Sacher Salzburg

And actually, I can’t talk about everything we ate without highlighting the amazing treats we got at Hotel Sacher Salzburg! We were welcomed with a platter of fresh fruit and an individually packaged Sacher Torte for each of us. Do not skip the Sacher Torte in Vienna or Salzburg!
