The Best Food to Eat on the Island of Hawai’i

Updated July 2, 2021.

It’s everyone’s favorite: What I Ate Wednesday! Last week we talked about the luau on the Island of Hawai’i, and this week I’m letting you in on the rest of the Hawaiian goodness! If there’s one thing Hawaiians know how to do, it’s eat well!

Fresh Fruit

Maybe it’s all the hiking, but Hawaii quite possibly has the sweetest, juiciest fruit I’ve ever had! It was definitely fresh, and there were even some I didn’t recognize!

Acai Bowl

And speaking of fruit, this is a typical Hawaiian treat I’d never tried before. It’s blended Acai berries and milk underneath, with fresh fruit (pineapple, papaya, and coconut in this case) and granola on top. Super sweet and super yummy!

Big Breakfast

Hawaiians take the American-sized breakfast to a new level. Good thing there are tons of active things to do on the islands!

Sweets

Hawaii used to have a lot of sugar plantations, so it stands to reason that they should have some incredible sweets! Masaladas like the one pictured below are like frosted doughnuts–yum! I got the lilikoi frosted one, since I didn’t know what lilikoi was (it’s passion fruit)! Mochi are Japanese sweets filled with a variety of fillings. We got them in Hilo from a Japanese bakery, and they were the best I’ve had since living in Japan!

Fancy Dinners

People come to Hawaii for many reasons, but I imagine the majority are celebrating something. My sweet husband does not like to go out to eat (we usually get take-out and eat in the room when we travel!), but he will do just about anything to please me. Much to my delight, he took me out to a nice dinner at Pineapples Fresh Island Food in Hilo for our anniversary!
