What to Eat in Huntsville

Updated June 27, 2020.

It’s What I Ate Wednesday and this week we’re eating our way through the South! You know you’re in North Alabama when trout and grits with fried green tomatoes is on the menu! So what was the first thing I ate when I arrived?

Commerce Kitchen

This was probably the best BLT I’ve ever had, my friends. How do you go wrong with bacon and fried green tomatoes? You don’t. Thank you Commerce Kitchen!

Pane e Vino

Where in Huntsville can you find pizzas named for famous paintings and artists? At the pizza place attached to the art museum, of course! Courtesy of Pane e Vino.

Oh, and their cannoli was pretty delightful, too!

Coffee Break

Need a coffee break? Look no farther than the Cozy Cow by Big Spring Park or Old Towne Coffee Shoppe on Pratt Avenue.

Need a little something sweet to go with your coffee? Old Towne Coffee Shoppe also has huge cinnamon rolls available, smothered in icing, of course.

Below the Radar

Got a craving for Fried Mac and Cheese? You’ll find it at Below the Radar, just a couple blocks off the square.

Looking for fresh seafood? You won’t find it in North Alabama. But you will find fresh lake trout. And if you’re lucky, you’ll find it over a fried green tomato and grits at Below the Radar.

Connor’s Steak and Seafood

In the South, we like it smothered in sauce. Check out this amazing mahi-mahi with couscous and probably the best broccoli I’ve ever had.

Whatever Connors Steak and Seafood does to their broccoli, everyone should do.

Not full yet? Check out this Southern Strawberry Shortcake. No stale, unsweetened biscuit here; it comes with two thick slices of pound cake.

Real Strawberry Shortcake with ice cream and whipped cream, for the win.

1892 East

Need to go vegetarian? Vegan? Gluten-free? Huntsville has a surprising number of restaurants for people who need to be on special diets. The El Greco pizza above has a gluten-free crust, and you’d never miss the meat in this vegetarian meal from 1892 East:

Can’t decide if you want fried shrimp or shrimp and grits? Why choose?

And speaking of combining amazing flavors, what’s the best combination of bread pudding, chocolate, coffee, custard, and ice cream? That would be mocha bread pudding from 1892 East!

Any foodies out there ready to give Huntsville a try? I recommend it! Do not miss that mocha bread pudding!
