The Best Food to Eat on O’ahu

Updated July 1, 2021.

Aloha on this What I Ate Wednesday! This week we’re coming at you from O’ahu, Hawaii, where Steve and I spent our first anniversary. This is the tale of the many island delicacies we enjoyed on our trip!

Breakfast

That’s quite the spread, isn’t it? The Hawaiians know how to treat themselves to a breakfast! I mean, cinnamon roll pancakes! And fruity syrups, too. And my friends, you have not had a filling breakfast until you’ve had tuna steak and eggs! The iced banana coffee was truly an island delight, as was my delicious peanut butter and mango sandwich. I recommend it!

Lunch

Well, I’m sure it’s no surprise there’s a LOT of seafood on the island menus, and we needed to try as much as we could! Steve enjoyed fish tacos, I got the grill “wahoo” fish with tropical salsa, and we shared a delightful “poke” made of tuna sashimi and spicy sauce. I know some of you have an aversion to raw fish, but thankfully for me, I don’t!

Supper

We mostly ate chirashi (again, raw fish and rice!) for suppers because Steve knows it is my favorite, but one evening in particular, we stopped off at the highly recommended shrimp truck, Giovanni’s! We got the garlic shrimp and rice and were very satisfied! We see why it was recommended to us so many times!

Dessert

Now to my favorite, dessert! The Hula Pie comes from Duke’s Restaurant on Waikiki Beach, and it’s an incredible (and huge!) macadamia ice cream pie with a chocolate cookie crust, covered in hot fudge, and topped with whipped cream and macadamia nuts! We split it, and it was difficult to finish! But we did. Also, we got the cutest, softest little cookies with fruit on them. We might have enjoyed them for midnight snacks!
